Spain's electricity tariffs: How to choose the right one for your home

All homes must use electricity and thus contract their supply. All homes, however, have different consumption habits and needs depending on a number of factors. The City Council of Barcelona has created a guide to help citizens choose their electricity rates as planned or the power they need every day. عقارات قطر

As the Energy Rights Specialist Coordinator Raquel Rodríguez explained, the first thing to assess is the electric power you want to recruit. This is directly related to the power of electric appliances in the home and not to the surface area of the house when all this is used simultaneously. In other words, the consumption does not so much depend on whether the apartment is small or large, but on the amount of household appliances used in the household at the same time.

Secondly, it is necessary to assess the option of contracting an hourly discrimination rate. "This rate is interesting because two different prices are offered on the basis of two defined periods," Rodríguez explains.

Finally, the fact that electricity can be contracted from free markets or regulated market market vendors must be taken into consideration. In the event of contracting with the latter, discounted rates are available.

The electricity supply we need

One of the aims of our electricity tariff is to prevent the supply bill from being overpayed. "We must therefore ensure that the electricity bill is tailored to our home needs," says Rodríguez.

In this context, we must ensure that the electrical power we need for the electrical equipment that is used at home is contracted, as contract power is sometimes higher than what is actually being used, with unnecessary extra costs.

In order to reduce the cost, it is advisable to optimize the use, when necessary and rationally, of existing electrical equipment. If different electrical equipment is avoided simultaneously, electrical power less than our rate can be contracted because all equipment will not have to be used at the same time.

The maximum power that can be used at the same time

All electrical equipment has electricity assigned (small or wide) in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). If we use several devices simultaneously, each one adds up its electrical power until we reach a point where we can no longer use more machinery at a time, so that this amount exceeds our electrical power. This is the highest power that can be consumed at the same time.

When maximum power is exceeded, the service is disconnected from the new digital meters and the home runs out of electricity. The low contracted power is the most economic and efficient way to use electricity, as it optimizes the use of equipment and reduces the cost of the electricity bill.

When is high electricity considered necessary?

It may be enough to hire 3.45 or 4.5 kW of power for most households. It is because of the large number of electrical equipment which need to operate at the same time that it is decided to hire a high electric power.

Home with all electricity and not gas; apartments with lift, heated swimming pool or houses with air-conditioning conduits. You can choose a power exceeding 10 kW that can only be hired on the free market.

The hourly rate of discrimination

The hourly rate of discrimination is another effective way of finding rates which fit our energy consumption. The benefit is increased by contracting this rate if the use of electrical equipment is increased during the difference between lower and higher working hours and its use is reduced during the times during which the price is higher.

With an hourly discrimination rate the energy price during this period is 42 percent reduced in relation to the regulated price, and the price increases by 21 percent during the peak period. "When you move toward hours of the difference the use of the most powerful electrical equipment, such as the washer or iron, we will use energy during hours of lower prices so we can achieve up to 30% savings on invoices," explains Rodriguez.

Market free or regulated

The Energy Rights Coordinator recalls that if discounted rates are available it is interesting to contract the supply with a regulated marketer in order to be able to have the social bond rate with discounts of between 25 and 40% in the bill.

On the other hand, if the supply of electricity is contracted with a free market market marketer, we must know how to determine whether additional maintenance services have been added to the bill. Sometimes it is the case that people don't know that with their bills, they don't use maintenance services and that implies unnecessary expenses.

Combined tariffs on various supplies

The free markets are the only ones with invoices combined with various supplies and maintenance services. They offer different rates and specific products so that users can select the most convenient one they think is. Therefore, when you use electricity most, you can find certain rates that can provide discounts for the hours.

However, as the Energy Rights Expert warns, the rate that can be more affordable when analyzed over long periods is the rate provided by regulated marketers (PVPC for electricity and TUR for gas) and combined invoices do not permit.
